I was once the land, the ocean,
and the great explosion;
the big bang that began it all.
That allowed us to rise,
and then to fall.
And by my surprise,
I’d found an even greater wall.
Was it always there?
Or had it come from nowhere?
Something I never noticed before,
Perhaps there were more.
I began to tear it down,
but saw the world crumbling around.
I paused a moment to grasp a thought,
and forgot what it was I sought.
Why was I tearing this wall apart?
What has it ever done? Why go so far?
It was then that I truly, truly understood
that the wall was the world in which I stood.
And I was never myself,
always someone else;
hiding behind my fears until
all the world then fell.
Was there ever a way to avoid this mess?
Would a tired world ever have the chance to rest?
It wasn’t until then that I realized
the true extent of this living predicament.
I had lived my whole life
as though I was paying for rent.
No more, I said. I would rather die.
And that was when all the world
had come to life. I was brought into the light.
